Rhodes Spedale and LIVE JAZZ GROUP chooses selections
from the Great
American Songbook and Jazz standards and
make them interesting and
enjoyable to today's listeners.
Although respectful of the original composers intentions, they
are
played with innovative twists: For example, the contrapuntal
Bach-like
first selection, FLY ME TO THE MOON, the New
Orleans Second line
approach to ALEXANDER"S RAGTIME BAND
& AC-CENT-TUATE THE POSITIVE,
the contemporary vision
of TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT, the sensitively
portrayed
MY FUNNY VALENTINE & BODY & SOUL.
Reverence is given to modern jazz standards such as
THE PREACHER and
BLUE BOSSA and a re-imagining
of Hampton Hawes interpretation of STELLA
BY STARLIGHT
from Hamp's only student, Rhodes Spedale.
A DAY IN THE
LIFE OF A FOOL(Manha de Carnaval) has
heartfelt yearning and THAT'S LIFE
is an anthem for persistence.
LULU'S BACK IN TOWN is a celebration and
YOU"D BE SO NICE TO COME HOME TO makes you want to
meet the one who
would be so nice to come home to.
The entire CD goes from BACH to BOP with a few interspersed
second lines
and a whole lot of warmth and feeling.
